John J. South, a Huntsville native, graduated summa cum laude from the University of Alabama-Huntsville in 2019 with a degree in Music, Liberal Arts focus. As a trumpet player, John performed extensively with the Huntsville Youth Orchestra and UAH Wind Ensemble, and was a collegiate intern at the Tennessee Valley Music Festival in 2016 and 2017.
As a conductor, John has been passionate about helping to enrich his local community. Since 2017, he has been an active participant in UAH's student-run summer ensembles, including the addition of a Summer Orchestra to the existing Summer Band program. John has conducted both ensembles, which consist of UAH music students and musicians from the local community. He joined Opera Huntsville in 2019, serving as music director for Cosi fan Tutte in the spring of 2020.
John maintains an interest in musicology and history, and has had articles published in UAH's Perpetua Journal of Undergraduate Research and the Alabama Humanities Foundation's online Encyclopedia of Alabama. He has been mentored and influenced by Dr. Carolyn Sanders, Dr. David Ragsdale, Joseph Lee, Erin Huelskamp-Bohn, Bruce Zeiger, Gregory Vajda, Phil Weaver, and Ingrid von Spakovsky-Weaver.
